In a prime position on the lakefront, the Hotel Grand Cadenabbia is an ideal base, whether you want to laze by the pool or venture out to explore the lake.

This classic hotel dates back to the early 19th century and has retained much of its original charm – from the sweeping staircase, chandeliers and artwork in the lobby, to the traditionally decorated rooms. It has some of the best views on the lake, and is barely 20 steps across the road to the water. The Villa Carlotta and gardens is right next door, and it's a short walk to the ferry point when you want to hop on a boat over to Bellagio or one of the other towns around the lake.

FACILITIES

Tucked away in the lush garden behind the hotel, the large outdoor pool offers an oasis of peace. It's surrounded by palm trees and has plenty of loungers where you can sunbathe or read a book.

Buffet restaurant on the top floor, with floor-to-ceiling windows and panoramic views. The restaurant serves up tasty Italian fare from a mix of buffets and menus.

Al Chiaro di Luna*. An outdoor à la carte restaurant on the top floor, with a gourmet Italian menu and stunning views.

Bar* on the fourth floor is a small, elegant space where you can relax in the evenings. It leads out onto the rooftop terrace.

ROOMS

The rooms are simple, elegant and comfortable. There's a range of single and twin rooms to choose from – though it's definitely worth going for one with a balcony and lake view. All rooms come with a satellite TV, air-conditioning, hairdryer, minibar* and safe.

Cots are available free of charge.
