The elusive northern lights may be much loved visitors to the Arctic skies of Lapland, but they arrive on their own terms, sometimes unannounced and unexpected gracefully lighting the heavens with the most magical patterns. This Arctic break offers the chance to experience several Arctic excursions alongside your search for these elusive sky dancing illuminations.

Itinerary

Flying into Enontekio Airport in Northern Finland from your chosen UK departure point, you will board a coach for your 1- 1¼ hour transfer to your chosen accommodation in Finnish or Swedish Karesuando separated only by the natural border of the Muonio River.

Due to the extended nature of the excursions your itinerary will be revised according to local conditions and given to you upon arrival. There may be one day when you undertake two of the activities and your itinerary will be planned to accommodate the local weather conditions. During your welcome meeting, which will be held on arrival at your accommodation, your guide will give you all the information you need to get the best from your Lapland break and will also offer a list of optional excursions you can add to tailor-make your perfect stay! You can add optional excursions on to your trip at any time during your stay but these will be subject to availability.

A Northern Lights Snowmobile Safari: This 2 hour evening excursion sees you heading out into the snowy wilderness to a vantage point in the hope of spotting some northern lights activity (the appearance of northern lights is based on the correct atmospheric conditions and solar activity which cannot be guaranteed). Two adults share a snowmobile taking turns to drive. The trip includes a short break and a hot drink.

A Call of the Wild Husky Safari

This one hour fast paced excursion provides an unforgettable journey into the wilderness on a sled pulled by your own team of huskies. Two adults share the sled and take a turn to steer the dogs. The trip includes a short break and a hot drink.

Reindeer Camp

A 2 hour excursion where you can learn about herding and lassoing reindeer from authentic reindeer farmers. You will then climb into your own sleigh and venture not the snowy countryside for a reindeer safari. The trip includes a short break and a hot drink.

Northern Lights Forest Trek

A guided one hour walk up the fell to the optimum vantage point for viewing the northern lights should they grace you with an appearance. Although this natural phenomenon cannot be guaranteed, this area of zero light pollution allows a fascinating view of the heavens and the millions of starts not normally visible to the human eye in our street lit towns and cities. The trip includes a short break and a hot drink.

Snowshoe Introduction

Enjoy a 2 hour adventure on foot with this fun excursion. One you have mastered walking with snowshoes enjoy this hike across the Arctic landscape. Expect plenty of fresh Arctic air and lots of giggles. Surely exercise like this shouldn’t be so much fun!

Sámi Museum Visit

Enjoy a half day visit to the fascinating Sámi Museum where you will have a fascinating insight into the culture and traditions of the Sámi, Europe’s last indigenous people.

Fell Viewpoint Snowmobile Safari

A snowmobile tour to a breathtaking vantage point on one of the local fells, with far-reaching views. Based on two adults sharing a snowmobile. **

Igloo Interlude
Not many people can say they have spent the night in an igloo, in the heart of the Arctic wilderness. But that is the extraordinary experience you can enjoy (or brave!) during your Arctic break. Inside, the igloo is surprisingly warm and cosy. The ice bed has a snow surround, covered with warm reindeer hides. We will provide you with an Arctic sleeping bag. Candlelight lends the whole experience a romantic and special atmosphere. And don’t worry, there is the back-up of a warm room, just in case you feel the chill!

Cross-Country Ski School and Tour
The Davvi Arctic Lodge is a great choice for cross country skiing. There are long wilderness trails, some groomed and illuminated, with one located next to the hotel. You will receive ample tuition before trying a short skiing trip. It’s not as complicated as it looks and great fun too. Guiding and equipment included. On completion of this tour, Ski hire is available for £20 per person. ( Deposit payable)

Ice Fishing by Snowmobile

This is a great trip for all the family. Travelling by snowmobile along a small stretch of the 200km Victoria Route, inaugurated by Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, you arrive at a frozen lake where you can try traditional ice-fishing. Once you have drilled a hole in the ice, you may even catch your lunch. **

Northern Lights Husky Safari
Take a magical evening safari on a sledge pulled by a team of dogs. You will travel across frozen lakes and through silent forests and hopefully you will glimpse the beautiful Northern Lights evolving overhead (of course, this cannot be guaranteed).

Glass Cabin in a Reindeer Reserve (overnight)

Add a night in a glass cabin in the middle of a reindeer ranch! Your cosy cabin has a glass roof over the bed area allowing you to gaze into the stars or the Northern Lights from the comfort of your bed. Added to this is your are surrounded by hundreds of reindeer in the midst of a magical Lapland wilderness.

Further Information

All excursions are subject of minimum numbers and local conditions and are non-refundable. However, you will be automatically refunded the full price paid for your excursion if it doesn’t go ahead due to operational reasons.

Please note: On all safaris, you may be required to share with another person from the group. All prices are per person. All distances and durations are approximate and subject to weather conditions and route on the day.

*A €50 deposit is payable locally, this is non refundable in the case of damage to the equipment

**All Snowmobile activities carry a €980 damage deposit which is payable locally. A valid driving license must be shown upon arrival.

Please note: For bookings of more than one igloo, we cannot guarantee that the overnight stay will be held on the same night.
