3* Britannia Excelsior, Cadenabbia
In the delightful scenery of Lake Como, surrounded by beautiful 17th century villas, is the Hotel Britannia Excelsior, established in 1830, which, thanks to its position directly by the lake and only 50m away from the boats landing stage, enjoys spectacular views over the promontory of Bellagio.
The Hotel, built in Liberty style, will give you the chance to immerse yourselves in that same old world atmosphere, unique and inimitable, and, with its garden with swimming pool, the various lounges, the bar and the excellent restaurant, will make your holiday a really memorable one.
The Hotel is also provided with private car park, garage and berth.
In the past, boatmen used to leave Como early in the morning and used to stop at an Inn in the evening, before starting their journey in the early hours of the following day with goods or passengers bound for Colico or the banks of Chiavenna.
In 1801 Giuseppe Gianella had the brilliant idea of transforming the old and modest Inn at the port of Cadenabbia (“Boatmen’s House”) into a luxurious hotel for tourists and travellers, the very first hotel in the entire area.
In no time Cadenabbia became one of the most popular tourist resorts for travellers from all over the world.
The increasing number of people who wished to spend their holidays in Cadenabbia, because of its beautiful location and its mild climate, made it indispensable to build new hotels to welcome different classes of guests.
Because of the requisitions occurred during the two last century’s world wars, it is difficult to exactly establish the presence of very important guests in the Hotel Britannia Excelsior, but its for sure that during the 1970s-80s members of the Italian Parliament as well as Italian Premiers, such as Giulio Andreotti and Emilio Colombo, who came to Cadenabbia to attend international political meetings together with other European Premiers and Presidents, repeatedly stayed in this hotel.
Most certainly, since, all through the 18th and 19th centuries Cadenabbia was the place where illustrious characters such as the novelists Stendhal and Shelley, the poet Longfellow, Queen Victoria, Giuseppe Verdi and the German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer came to meet and spend their holidays, many important personalities in the fields of art, music and literature were guests of the Hotel Britannia Excelsior.
It was after World War II that the hotel was bought by the Bramardi family, who enlarged it, added a swimming pool and ran it until Mrs Bramardi died in the 1990s, when the hotel passed on to Mr Manzoni, who, after a few years, sold it to the nowadays owners. The hotel has recently been restored and still today is one of the British tourists’ favourite places where to spend a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
